Cake Stands

Published March 1, 2006. From Cook's Illustrated.

We tested five models to see which gave us the best view.

Overview:

Frosting a layer cake is no easy task. Aside from a deft hand, the pros use a turntable-style cake stand. These stands elevate the cake, giving the baker a better view and making it possible to hold the spatula steady while rotating the stand—improving the likelihood of seamless frosting. We tested five models. The ultimate stand consists of a metal table over an enameled cast-iron base. It worked great, but cost too much for the occasional birthday cake. A plastic version of the same stand is $43 cheaper and makes cake decorating just as easy.
