Grill Grate Cleaning Block

This grill pumice promises a deeper clean than the typical grill brush. Does it deliver?

What You Need To Know

We used this pumice block (two are included in the GrillStone Value Pack Cleaning Kit), which is attached to a plastic handle, to clean messy charcoal and gas cooking grates. We routinely clean preheated grates just before we put on the food to cook, and this block’s short handle put testers’ hands too close to the heat. However, we found that this strong scrubber quickly stripped off all the accumulated gunk even from cold grates. As we scrubbed, the pumice wore into a grooved shape that conformed to that of the grates, allowing it to clean even more thoroughly. Because each block lasted for only three or four cleanings (replacement blocks cost $4.49), and it generated abundant pumice dust that had to be rinsed off before we could use the grate, we find that it’s best used as a once-per-season grill grate reconditioning tool. Still, it’s one that we’d recommend to get grates shining like new.
