Since it would be a shame for your homemade pies to suffer at the hands of underperforming tools, we’ve put together this roundup of our favorite—and rigorously kitchen-tested—pie-baking equipment.

This golden-hued metal plate baked crusts beautifully without overbrowning; even bottom crusts emerged crisp and flaky. Additionally, we liked this plate’s nonfluted lip, which allowed for maximum crust-crimping flexibility. One minor drawback: The metal surface is susceptible to cuts and nicks, but we found that this didn’t affect its performance.
Our runner-up produced impressive pies with gorgeous, golden exteriors and lightly tanned bottom crusts. Its pie slices were also easy to cut and remove. However, while the fluted lip gave us pretty pies and made this plate easy to grab and maneuver into and out of the oven, we ultimately found that it hindered versatility. Its built-in crust guide may be helpful for some bakers, but we preferred products with nonfluted lips to allow for more crimping options.
This pin capably handled dough for pie, with gentle weight and a slightly textured surface that holds a dusting of flour for less sticking. Its long, straight shape made achieving even dough thickness and rolling out larger disks easy.

Its textured grip felt secure for a wide range of hand sizes, and thanks to its gently rounded edges and the soft, hand-polished top spine, we could comfortably choke up on the knife for “precise,” “effortless” cuts.

Our former favorite won again. We liked its comfortable handle and offset, double-edged serrated blade, which sliced cleanly and lifted intact slices easily, no matter the filling or crust. Its broad blade securely supported slices in transit. And the price is right.
These spoons boast comfortable handles and great accuracy. The rim of each spoon is flush with the handle so it is easy to sweep accurately, and the set nests together nicely.
We recommend placing pies baked in the glass Pryex pie plate on an unheated metal baking sheet before sliding it into the oven. The metal pan still helps conduct heat to the bottom of the pie but without risk of cracking the Pyrex plate since it heats up gradually. This model is a kitchen workhorse that won't let you down.
The silicone center ring on this oval pan kept the pie plate anchored in place, allowing us to transfer the ring and pie plate into and out of the oven without fear of the pie sliding off. A wide rim on opposite sides made it easiest of all to grasp through oven mitts. As with the other models in our lineup, its nonstick surface cleaned up easily.
This model is firm enough for scraping and scooping but also fit neatly into tight corners. Its straight sides and wide, flat blade ensured that no food was left unmixed. The all-silicone design eliminates any crannies that could trap food. It felt exceptionally comfortable. Its smaller blade fell short in our folding test.
This light, maneuverable brush features perforated flaps in the bristles that hold liquid like a bubble wand. It easily trapped watery egg wash, and was delicate enough to paint pies without damage.
A smaller version of our favorite cake carrier, this collapsible plastic tote expanded to accommodate even our tallest Mile-High Lemon Meringue Pie. Its large, nonskid base held 8-, 9-, and 10-inch pies perfectly in place, even on bumpy car rides. A bonus: It comes with two molded inserts for deviled eggs, one of which can be flipped upside down and used as a second tier for transporting two shorter pies at once. Its one slight fault: The latches took a little finessing to secure properly.
The deeply beveled edge of this scraper cut through pizza and bread dough quickly and scraped the work surface effectively. The textured polypropylene handle was easy to hold on to, even with greasy or floury hands, and was thinner than other scrapers’ handles, helping us hold it flat to the work surface for easier, more effective scooping and scraping.
Perfection Strips ($9.95 for a set of three) consist of broad lengths of wood of varying thicknesses. They are placed alongside the dough, and the pin is rolled on top of them. The strips do not impede the rolling pin, but you may want to use them only as you start to approach the desired thickness (keeping them oriented correctly as you turn the dough early on can be frustrating). Novice rollers were surprised at the flawless uniformity they achieved with the help of these guides. However, we encountered the same problem using French-style pins here as with the rings.
Our longtime favorite scale has it all: consistent accuracy; a clear digital display (which pulls out from the frame and includes a backlight); responsive, clearly labeled, accessible buttons; a removable platform that makes cleanup a breeze; and a sturdy, slim body that stores easily. It’s a pricier package but worth the investment.
