How often do you really have the time to bake a yeast roll from scratch?

A warm, golden homemade roll is ideal for mopping up creamy gravy. But get real. How often do you have the time to bake a yeast roll from scratch? We wondered: Can any supermarket frozen dinner rolls pass for homemade? Sad to say, after tasting five styles from three brands, our answer is a resounding "No!" But we did find a few that will do in a pinch. Our tasters preferred rolls that are neither overly sweet nor overly salty. One variety came out on top for their light, fluffy, crumb and substantial crust.
