Ingredients: 1 package, dry active yeast (2 1/8 scant teaspoons); 1/8 cup, water (warm, 110 to 115 degrees); 1/4 cup, granulated sugar; 2 , large eggs; 1 tablespoon, milk; 1/2 teaspoon, vanilla extract; 2 1/8 cups, unbleached all-purpose flour; 1 1/8 teaspoons, table salt; 1/4 pound (113 grams), unsalted butter (1stick), cut into 1-inch pieces and slightly softened

To give this rich, breadlike coffee cake a tender crumb and a melt-in-your-mouth texture, use plenty of butter, mix the dough very thoroughly, and make sure you let it rise twice.
