Converting Oven and Instant-Read Thermometer Temperatures

Guidelines for converting Fahrenheit degrees to Celsius and Gas Mark.

Refer to our oven temperature table to convert Fahrenheit degrees to Celsius and Gas Mark (Imperial):

OVEN TEMPERATURES

| FAHRENHEIT | CELSIUS | GAS MARK (IMPERIAL) | |------------|---------|---------------------| | 225 | 105 | 1/4 | | 250 | 120 | 1/2 | | 275 | 130 | 1 | | 300 | 150 | 2 | | 325 | 165 | 3 | | 350 | 180 | 4 | | 375 | 190 | 5 | | 400 | 200 | 6 | | 425 | 220 | 7 | | 450 | 230 | 8 | | 475 | 245 | 9 |

We include doneness temperatures in many of our recipes, such as those for poultry, meat, and bread. We recommend an instant-read thermometer for the job. For temperatures not represented in the chart above, use this simple formula:

Subtract 32 degrees from the Fahrenheit reading, then divide the result by 1.8 to find the Celsius reading.

EXAMPLE:

“Roast until the juice runs clear when the chicken is cut with a paring knife or the thickest part of the breast registers 160 degrees on an instant-read thermometer.” To convert:

160˚ F - 32 = 128˚

128˚ ÷ 1.8 = 71˚ C (rounded down from 71.11)

This is a members' feature.
