Converting recipes with metric measures can be daunting, as can scaling recipes for different numbers of servings. The KitchenCalc Handheld Kitchen Calculator and Timer ($24.95) is designed to simplify both tasks. We pulled out an old French recipe for eight people written in grams and converted it into five servings and American measures. Though the buttons looked intimidating, with individual keys for units of measure, the manual gave us clear instructions, and in no time we’d converted the recipe. It also saved us from making the mistake of converting fluid ounces into weight. We could have used any calculator, but the culinary-specific KitchenCalc, which comes with a clear plastic cover to protect it from kitchen messes, saved us time and effort.
