Bagel Slicers

Published March 1, 2010. From Cook's Illustrated.

If your confidence around serrated knives is questionable, a bagel slicing machine might be the answer.

Some of us could slice a bagel in our sleep; others worry about “bagel-related injuries,” a well-documented emergency-room complaint. If you fall into the first category, our favorite serrated bread knife by Wüsthof is the only tool you need. But if you’re one of the second group, a bagel slicer is a handy contraption that prevents the bagel from rolling around while halving it evenly—and safely. We tested three styles, comparing them with the Wüsthof. Our favorite did the job safely, though with some squashing and distortion.

Bottom line: The serrated knife is still superior for consistency and control, but the Bagel Guillotine will give you peace of mind.
