Potato Mashers

Published November 1, 2002.

Disk mashers outperform wire-looped models.

Mashing potatoes is not a glamorous task, but it can be made easier by using the right tool for the job: a potato masher. There are two classic styles of potato masher: wire-looped, with a zigzag presser, and disk, with a perforated round or oval plate. Modern mashers, as it turns out, are simply variations on these two original designs. We tested a total of eight mashers on our Mashed Sweet Potatoes to find those with the most comfortable grip and the most effective mashing mechanism.
